Malibu High School PTSA General Associates Meeting

November 17th 2005

Heather Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM in the school library and welcomed everyone.

The minutes were approved.

Cathy Egner- TreasurerŐs Report.

Grant Requests (see attached)

Mr. Bennett spoke for the need of tennis rackets when questions came from the floor. He said the rackets usually last about two years and are well used. If there are no rackets the tennis courts will go unused. Proposal passed unanimously.

Transaction report (see attached)

Motion to ratify checks 3543-3582 passed unanimously.

Bridget Hanson said the nearly cancelled (rain) tennis tournament ended up being a great success. However the boutique had to be cancelled. Many thanks to Bridget and her team.

Heather Anderson introduced the topic of completing the furnishing the middle school quad area. The new tables have been a huge hit, not just with students but also with teachers. Mr. Bennet (math teacher) said teachers were using them to talk to students. They are easier to clean and maintain. The project was started last spring but is unfinished due to lack of funds. Due to the success of the tennis tournament more funds have become available. A motion to finish the lunch table area with a budget not to exceed $7,500 was passed unanimously.

Dr. Mark Kelly- PrincipalŐs report.

Dr. Kelly was pleased to give his report this month, as there was good news. Firstly, Malibu High School has been approved for an additional custodial staff.

This year there is to be a separate Middle School Year book, which is being organized by Sandy Thacker.

ASB Club day was a big success; Homecoming week went well, cross-country boys in CIF final. Tennis in CIF. Hot food vending machines have been installed.

The culprits of the recent graffiti episode have been found. All individuals have been made accountable. These are teenagers and they make mistakes. Dr. Kelly makes them understand and uses these incidents as teachable moments. Some outsiders were involved. A question from the floor asked Dr. Kelly what the punishment was and even though he could not detail exactly due to privacy of students he did mention, a 5-day suspension, some school changes for some students, counseling, on contracts, restitution. The sheriffs department considers the extent of the vandalism a felony and their investigation is on going.

Homework still continues to be a top topic. There are a vast variety of views; some say it is better this year. The teachers per grade are trying to work together on scheduling tests etc. One needs to remember the teacherŐs perspective. Discussions are on going

MHS is fortunate to have so many volunteers and many benefits from the Shark Fund, to mention just a few,

After school library, athletic trainer, council program, Star Program (Deputy Bob), English department release time (pays for a sub so teachers can give feed back on writing assignments).

The meeting then broke out into several groups for discussions and information. These included, online help with Matt Horvath (pinnacle and discovery zone), parent eyes, PTSA (how it receives money, makes budget, and spends cash), the teen brain with Susan Stiffelman, how does MHS honor accomplished work with Karen Quartz; and homework with Dr. Kelly.

Meeting adjourned 9:00PM

Respectfully submitted
