Malibu High School PTSA General Association Meeting
May 19th , 2005
Nancy Bishop opened the
meeting 9.05AM in the choir room at Malibu High School.
Carolyn Deimer made a motion to approve the minutes of the previous
meeting. Motion carried.
Cathy Egner- TreasurerÕs Report.
Signatures on the PTAÕs
checking account and money market account need to be changed. Nancy Bishop and
Cindy Sindell are to be removed and Heather Anderson and Sandy Thacker to be
added. Remaining Mark Kelly and Cathy Egner.
Beth Bardovi moved to ratify
checks #3478-3515. Motion carried.
Agreed to buy two new
microwaves for the cafeteria to alleviate the long lines at lunch.
Cathy gave a run through of
the accounts as this is the last meeting of the year (see attached). There have
been overages on the copy machines. Shark fund was unable to fund the complete
PTA budget by $10,000 and $11,000 is being reserved to pay the gift tax.
The teachers had really gone
over board on the use of the copy machines and it was planned to teach them how
to use them more efficiently to save waste. Implementing user I.D.
It was suggested any money
left over be spent on power washing before graduation, replacing picnic benches
for the middle school area and planting the planters. It was proposed to spend
what we have and have minimum rollover. A motion was made that any money left
over at the end of the year is to be spent on beautification. Passed unanimously.
The subject that the
bathrooms were not being cleaned as evidenced at then being dirty at 9:00AM was
brought up. Will go to Dr. Kelly and find out what is happening.
Dr. Mark Kelly- Principals Report.
Optimist club gave
scholarships to 12 graduating students.
Testing is going very well.
Nancy Bishop was thanked for providing snacks for all the students.
Suzanne Webb organized for
all the students to have a teacher they knew give their tests. This paid off as
very few problems.
The Gala was successful. He
thanked those that attended.
Prom is tomorrow night. Dr.
Kelly spoke of the arrangements that have been made to keep the prom fun but
safe. All students had to sign a conduct contract. Consequences were stressed
and are intense if they wish to graduate with their class.
Dr. Kelly talked about the e
network drug issue. The Drugs and Alcohol committee and the Smart Moves program
are going to be joined, as the same people are going to these and they overlap.
Few parents attend.
Smart Moves is modeling their
program on the Crossroads School Program with community involvement.
USC have connected with the 9th
grade classroom. They did 12 lessons regarding drugs and alcohol. Jennifer
Gonzales said it got the students talking. They are to return and do a post
test. They did a pre test. The school is planning to implement the USC program
again.
Deputy Bob visits the 6th
graders.
AA programs have been
introduced. Last years Òchoir tripÓ have done peer presentations. Models are
being put together for the fall campaign.
Dr. Kelly took questions and
concerns from the floor.
Credible tips are needed to
follow up on any drug violations. Security is sent to take the student to Dr.
KellyÕs office. The police are called if in possession, parents are called. If
no evidence is found, student examined by the nurse and child is made to
consider why his name was being brought up in this manner. The consequence are
carried out to the fullest extend.
The teachers have a protocol
they follow if they suspect a child under the influence.
It is hard for the
administration to balance the right to privacy and the publics right to know
and this is why some stories are not always accurate.
Dr. Kelly felt he has dealt
with all incidents satisfactorily from the students and family side but remains
concerned on how to reassure parents.
Malibu has had very few
fights and incidents on the whole.
Dr. Kelly plans on writing
more about the subject in his newsletter.
Colleen OÕBrydon reported on
the Californian State PTA trip on April 27th to Sacramento to
protest the education budget. 12 different cities held rallies and press
conferences. Everyone is encouraged to get involved because it makes a
difference. Gov. Schwarzenegger is already backpedaling on some of his cuts.
Mary Hughes OÕLeary, along
with Gigi and Jill presented their plans for MHS beautification. (see attached,
mission statement, goals) They have broken down the campus into areas. Achieved
this year was the planting of the main entrance. The funds were supplied by the
graduating class of 2000-2001.
The next area that is planned is the middle school entrance
which requires funding for $8,000.
The senior quad, $8,000 and finally the amphitheatre, $10,000. Totaling
$26,000.
Right now the Gardening
Angels have no funds.
It was requested could they
do the planters outside the music area before graduation as this was felt to be
one of the ugliest areas in the whole school. An amendment to the early motion
was made by Carolyn Demier to add $1,000 for planting the planters by
graduation. Motion passed unanimously.
The Gardening Angels asked if the PTSA could give them more
money but it was pointed out that we are at the end of the year and there is no
money left.
The Gardening Angles strong
desire to see this project through was noted and everyone is encouraged to
donate to their cause. These projects will bring pride and respect to the
school. Please contact Mary for any further questions.
