Malibu High School PTSA General Association Meeting

October 21st, 2004

 

Nancy Bishop called the meeting to order at 7.03PM in the Library.

 

A motion was made to approve the minutes of the previous meeting by Nancy Bishop. Motion was carried.

 

Nancy Bishop - President: In future meetings we are planning to have some relevant presentations for parent education. If you know someone or a specific topic you would like to see discussed, please call Nancy at whonancy @aol.com

 

Sonia Ottusch- 5th VP: Anyone who wants to can sign up for e network. You can choose what type of email you want or no email at all. Looking for volunteer moderators.

Directory done. Handbook is being done next. Jill did a great job.

Community book in progress. Mary Ellen Sherry paying for printing.

 

Mark Kelly Ð Principals. Block Scheduling discussed. Mark Kelly feels it must come from the teachers. Committee is being formed with many teachers wanting to participate. Parent volunteers are also to be on committee. The meetings are going to start soon.

6-week Progress Report cards are going out on Friday. Purpose to notify parents. 2nd report goes out after thanksgiving.

The subject of lockers for the High School was brought up. Dr. Kelly has no objection to having the lockers. A committee needs to be formed to discuss cost, placement and maintenance. Mary Ellen Sherry and Mo Smith are going to look into the feasibility.

November, December lots happening, plays, music, and field trips.

The school is getting requests for enrollment from all over the place. District has three categories. I. Siblings entering 6th and 9th grade. 2. Employees of the school district. 3. Employees of Santa Monica and Malibu City. Mike Mathews made the decision not to take on new permits, as thought enrollment would go up. Mark Kelly does not want to open it up yet.

Drug and Alcohol committee will be getting together.

Dr. Kelly thanked Suigen for her help at the multicultural event yesterday.

Duel Enrollment is being considered. This would allow students to enroll in Santa Monica College classes that would be given at the MHS. The benefits would be that students could receive college credits. SMC would provide the instruction. The course would be free except for textbooks and materials. The classes would probable take place before school or after school. It is for 10th, 11th and 12th grades. They are not AP courses but can pick transferable classes, ie Arts. Example they could take art for one semester and get college requirement.

Excess homework has been discussed with departments. He is still observing. Teachers feel torn, pressure to cover materials and the state standards are massive.

Half the money to cover the PTSA budget has been received form the Shark Fund.

 

Checks to ratify were presented. Motion proposed and passed unanimously

 

Grant Proposal (see attached). Motion proposed and passed unanimously.

 

Suigen Constanza - Co- 1st V.P:  PTSA membership is at 853.

Reflections deadline is tomorrow.

Prizes and thank you gifts will be given to the winners and the judges this year. These have been donated. There will be an assembly to acknowledge the winners.

 

Bridget Hanson Ð 4th V.P:  Tennis tournament is 2 weeks away. Still looking for donations. Some discussion of whether the tournament should be continued as we have the Shark Fund now. It takes a lot of work for little amount collected.  To be discussed further.

Please sign up for scrip. www.escrip.com. Every time you use your cards, Vons, Ralphs etc., MHS gets some money.

Recycling Bin in the office for cell phones, ink jets. MHS gets money for recycling these items.

 

Nancy Bishop: New Business. There will be a Graduation Night meeting on November 22nd at 10am. All welcome.

Parents needed to organize the 8th grade promotion party and Breakfast.

Carmel Harper and Mary Hughes are going to head up Gardening Angels. Mary has $7000 from previous class gift. Plans needed.

An Environmentally Sound classroom is being organized by Cornucopia Farms and is located at the end of the parking lot in the green trailer.

 

Laura Rosenthal:  Donations must be given to the Shark Fund first. Cannot have separate fundraisers for specific items. Shark Fund donations down 33%

Discussed why Shark funds were down. Looking for ways to reach parents and find out why.

 

There will be a Christmas tree lot again this year. Everyone is welcome to volunteer, especially men.
