COMMUNITY SERVICE AT
MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT IS COMMUNITY SERVICE?
Community service is volunteering, the idea of giving your efforts willingly and for free to an individual or non-profit organization that benefits from your help, especially helping those without the resources to help themselves.
Performed outside of regular class time
Volunteer (unpaid and uncompensated) work
Your gift to the community
Community service is NOT
Helping a for-profit business (with or without pay or any type of compensation)
Doing jobs or chores for your parents
Participating in a regular school activity such as sports, drama, or music
Participating as a Teachers Aide (T.A.) or helping during school hours
A have to task you do grudgingly
More details may be found in the Community Service Booklet or online at http://malibuhigh.smmusd.org/. To be safe about what constitutes community service, before volunteering check with the Community Service Coordinator, Mrs. Constanza (Attendance Office) or an administrator.
RATIONALE
At Malibu High School we want to equip students for life beyond our doors, to help the student know that we all are a part of a society that requires active participation, through which the student can become a more responsible citizen. By working for the good of their community, students will see that individuals can and do make a difference. Students will, in fulfilling their hours, build a pattern of service so that they never stop learning, growing and contributing to their society.
HOW MANY HOURS ARE REQUIRED?
Middle school students must do 10 hours per school year.
High school students are required to complete 80 cumulative hours for graduation and to earn a diploma, specifically at least 20 hours per school year. Transfer students and re-entering students are required to perform at least 20 hours per school year while enrolled at MHS. Students who do not complete the required hours per school year will lose privileges: not be able to participate in the graduation ceremony, not attend the Prom, etc. (See http://malibuhigh.smmusd.org/ for more information.)
HOW DO I TURN IN MY COMMUNITY SERVICE?
After volunteering, turn in a completed Community Service Form in the Community Service Box in the Main Office (next to the Principals office). Forms are available in the Main Office and online at http://malibuhigh.smmusd.org/. Your forms will be recorded and retained for six months. Students should keep copies of all community service forms. The Community Service Coordinator will provide an update of all your community service when requested.
WHEN MAY I START?
Anytime. Summer volunteer work counts. If you need ideas for community service, see the Community Service Coordinator or the community service board outside the Main Office in the quad. Good luck, and many thanks for sharing your gifts of time and talent with our community.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Enclosed you will find a description of the Calabasas Teen Court . The purpose of this manual is threefold, it is designed to provide guidance and assistance to those attorneys and judges who volunteer to serve as a judge in the Calabasas Teen Court Program. Second, it is designed to assist in achieving uniformity and consistency on the part of judges throughout the Calabasas Teen Court Program.
The Calabasas Teen Court is based upon the premise that a youthful offender does not continue deliquent behavior when a peer jury decides appropiate consequences for the act committed. The underlying intent of the program is to utilize peer pressure in a positive manner to help foster lawabiding behavior. By using community service exposure to our judicial system as sentences, the offender will be able to better understand the importance of his/her behavior and accountability to society.
DATE & TIME The Calabasas Teen Court meets the third Thursday of every month at 4:30pm. With the exception of January, June and December at the Calabasas City Hall Council Chambers located at 26135 Mureau Road in the City of Calabasas.
We ask that all defendants and jurors arrive at 4:15pm to sign-in.
If you should have a questions regarding our Teen Court Program, you can contact the Community Services Department Monday-Friday at (818) 880-6461.
UCLA MEDICAL CENTER is again offering dedicated students to participate in our volunteer program. We have many unique opportunities for qualified students who are 15 years of age and older. Currenntly, UCLA has volunteer opportunities ranging from working in our labs to working in our Chil Life/Child Development department to piano playing for our visitors.
We require an 80-hours commtment volunteering at least 4 hours a week. After the students have achieved 100 hours we will be glad to issue a letter of recommendation.
Each year, the Auxiliary gives about 10-14 student volunteer awards. Applications will be mailed to all active volunteers in February. To be eligible, a student must have completed 150 hours of volunteer service by the end of December preceding the competition. New volunteers would be considered for the year 2003.
All volunteers are required to wear a volunteer jacket costing $20.00. Volunteers are required to dress professionally and to follow our guidelines. In addition, they are required to attend an orientation and will be oriented in their individual department after initial hospital orientation.
PLEASE CONTACT THE VOLUNTEER OFFICE AT 310-825-6002 for questions.
These are just two of many community service opportunities available, please contact your community service coordinator or go to
