Concurrent Enrollment

In order for courses to be approved for a Malibu High School (MHS) transcript, students must obtain pre-approval to concurrently enroll in a course outside of MHS.  Concurrent enrollment means enrollment in any non-SMMUSD course during the school year or during the summer by a regularly enrolled SMMUSD student.  Concurrent enrollment is an alternative means by which students may obtain credit toward graduation while being simultaneously enrolled at MHS and another approved educational program.  Concurrent enrollment options are to complement, and not supplant, program options at MHS.  Concurrent enrollment may be approved for “make-up,” “acceleration,” and/or “enrichment” purposes.  At MHS, we believe that students benefit most from classroom experiences that allow for opportunities to immerse themselves in their subject with peers.  Options that do not provide students such experiences will be strongly discouraged. 

 

Guidelines

·      Students are to take core original credit courses at MHS.  Core courses are English, mathematics, science, history, and foreign languages.

·      Students are required to take courses offered by MHS at MHS.  Exceptions may be made for the following reasons:

• A course offered at MHS cannot be accommodated within a student’s schedule;
  
• A course is not offered at MHS;
• A student remains enrolled in a MHS required course for at least one semester but does not successfully meet the accepted college admission standard of grade “C” or higher;
• SMMUSD does not offer the needed course as part of its summer school program.

·      Students obtain signed pre-approval from their school counselor before concurrently enrolling in any course.

·      Courses that are pre-approved and competed will be added to the student’s MHS transcript.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that MHS receives an official transcript from the school in which the student took the course(s). 

·      MHS will only accept courses from accredited institutions.  Questions regarding an institution’s accreditation status are to be referred to the principal.

·      The following options need to be considered as most appropriate first:

• SMMUSD Programs including summer school, continuation, and/or adult school;
• Community College;
• 4-year Colleges/Universities.

·      Online course work should be considered as an option of last resort.  All other options will be considered before allowing students to enroll in online courses. 

• Be advised that under current policy, the University of California (UC) only accepts online courses in two ways: if they are offered by UC College Prep Online and PASS/Cyber High—at the moment the only approved providers, both with UC connections—or if a high school principal certifies that a provider's course is comparable to other college-preparatory courses offered at the school site. UC will not accept any online courses in the areas of visual and performing arts (VPA) or laboratory science, unless science courses require an on-site wet lab component. 
• A new University of California policy for accepting online courses will set strict standards for providers of online instruction and assure students of access to high-quality courses from a greater number of sources.  UC expects the new online policy to affect students beginning with the 2008-09 academic year.  Any online courses taken during that year and after must be UC-approved in order to satisfy the "a-g" requirements.  When the new rules go into effect, students may still take online courses from providers not approved by UC, but those courses cannot be used to satisfy eligibility requirements.

Pepperdine Partnership Program

• Seniors honors students attending Malibu High School will be allowed to enroll in 100 and 200 level courses (lower division). The Malibu High School counselor or principal must certify eligibility of each Malibu High School student requesting enrollment at the University. A student may enroll in an upper division course (300-500) only with written permission from the professor.
• Credit will be granted and an academic transcript will be available for coursework taken.
• Students must complete the online Malibu High School application for Non-Degree status, provide a copy of their high school transcript, and complete a Health Immunization Form with proof of insurance.
• The cost of tuition for Malibu High School Students will be $150.00 per class unit, which is approximately 15% of the regular tuition. This cost will be adjusted periodically as tuition costs increase over the years. Students will not be charged a student government fee.

• Pepperdine course schedules are available for Malibu High School students on Pepperdine's website www.pepperdine.edu each semester, including summer session.
• Students must complete the following:

1. Malibu High School Application for Non-Degree Admission Status online at https://seaver.pepperdine.edu/admission/forms/nondegree/default.htm.
2. Provide a high school transcript (initial application only)
3. Students must complete a Health and Immunization Form at http://www.pepperdine.edu/healthcenter/ as well as provide health insurance information prior to registration.
